Kansas, the 34th state, known as the “Sunflower State” for the beautiful state flower, and American history of the Native Americans who were forced from their eastern homelands to take up residence on the reservations of the Midwest. Kansas, named from the Kansa Tribe of Native Americans, was a state that comes out of the history books as the Wild West. Just preceding the Civil War, Kansas Territory was torn in two. Each side wanted Kansas to pick a side. Select being either a Northern Free State in the Union, which did not allow slavery, or Southern State for slavery. Flooding the state with southerners, muskets in hand, they stuffed the ballot boxes. You can review legends as Wild Bill Hickok, a folk-hero, known as a skilled gunfighter and lawman, battled all the most evil, rotten, sinister of men. Tales of bloody battles and duels, Wild Bill was a marksman, professional poker player, and scout during the Civil War for the Union. He was killed while playing poker in South Dakota. The Wild West was an unsavory and dangerous place to live. Kansas was at the heart of it. Even the Civil War in Kansas was not organized, lacked supplies and weapons, but sent many men into battle regardless of the review. The death toll to the soldiers of Kansas from battles or illness, were greater than any other state. All whom stayed behind had to deal with the loss of life dismemberment, horror of war, illness or more, still continued to farm the land. These families had to grow to handle all of the struggles of this area’s most difficult time. Women had to be extremely strong, they had to work the fields, bare many children, for farm life was the most difficult in this ever-changing harshest of climate in Kansas. Women played the most important role by working outside, so much so that it became integral to their survival. Tornados, blizzards, droughts, hail, grasshoppers, and floods tormented the farmers with total loss of crops. Kansas is a state of struggles. During the Great Depression, Kansas took one of the hardest losses. Poverty, lack of employment, and drought hurt the people who lived here at an astronomical rate. It wasn’t until the government reviewed the struggle that they stepped in, that Kansas was able to begin recovery.
