South Carolina, bordered by North Carolina and Georgia, was one of the original 13 colonies. Originally part of the Carolina’s the two states separated after the Yamasee War. This was between the colonists and the natives. This was a complex war as there were many different evils that converged to create a blood bath for the colonists. All of the Indian tribes banded together and devastated the colonists. Hundreds of the colonists died in this battle, those who survived fled to Charles Town only to succumb to starvation. For more than a year, the colonists faced this annihilation and total destruction of colonies. Until, just as is mysteriously began, the war ended. The south banded together against the British taxation and with continued growth; battles and wars formed of the United States of America. As the lands were known for the rich soil, the development of the cotton gin grew the wealth of the southern plantation owner. With the greed and money of the plantations owners, the need for slaves grew. Being sympathetic with Virginia, South Carolina was a state that needed the slaves to work the fields. This became one of the largest populations of slaves next to Virginia and Georgia. With the election of President Abraham Lincoln came the separation of the North and South. The Civil War was on. The Union Army shut down the ports and in turn, the economy plummeted. South Carolina had a disadvantage in weaponry, maritime skills and numbers of soldiers. Easily taken over, the devastation of the war took place when General Sherman marched his troops through Columbia. On their way through they burned Columbia and many towns along the way. With the economy at a halt, the slaves freed, and the state in devastation, this set South Carolina as one of the poorest states after the war. This would keep a dark mark on the economy for years to come. At the same time, since the state was predominately now freed slaves, they began to dominate society. The Ku Klux Klan emerged, terrorizing and murdering the blacks attempting white supremacy. The first climax of the Klan was in the late 1870’s and martial law was enacted. The investigations of the Federal Government followed, 700 indictments were made, but few were successfully convicted, most were pardoned. Although the crime declined in the coming years, it hit a new peak in 1879. The evils of fear and greed continued to rule the political climate of the state. White elitists ran the political machine. They made it extremely difficult for the deprived blacks and poor whites from being able to vote. They wrote it in the constitution of the state in a way that would not violate the Fifteenth Amendment of the US Constitution. This deceit ran deep. Poll taxes and literacy tests prevented this large population of the state representation. This lasted for more than 60 years. It was not until the Civil Rights Movement and the Friendship Nine, Nine young black boys who were arrested for sitting at a lunch counter set for the whites, that history of South Carolina became national news. They opted for the “Jail, no bail” punishment of 30 days hard labor. South Carolina fought and fought this desegregation, on the streets and in the courts. Although they did without many rioting until the police overreacted to violence that erupted at a segregated bowling alley in Orangeburg. Three students were left dead of gunshots in the back, 30 were injured, two of them were beaten. One of the two beaten was a pregnant woman who lost her baby. South Carolina has seen the evils of the past and is now paying a price. From the colonists to the present, South Carolina has left many souls, lost between life and death, searching to complete their missions. Many angry souls left behind are still seeking revenge for the past. Souls left behind to complete missions, lost between life and death now roams South Carolina.
