Tennessee, a state which got its name from the Cherokee, is a state full of disorder and conflict. As the state developed, there was no structure of government in place. The state was divided in three sections. The divisions were separated on location: the east, west, and the center. With farming being a predominate economy, slavery was part of everyday life. Tennessee at first had joined the Union. West Tennessee soil was rich and the slaves worked on the cotton plantations. This grew into huge wealth for the plantation owners. This even spread into the middle section of Tennessee, but they were not of the caliber of the west. When the Civil War began and there was a call for Union Troops, Tennessee representatives didn’t want to give up the wealth they had acquired. Tennessee had an extremely large population of slaves. The census in 1860 noted that out of the 1.1 million people in Tennessee, 25% were slaves. That number is scary. Tennessee was a state split. They separated from the Union and the war was on. This split state became the location of many of the battles that occurred during the Civil War and most of the battles were won by the Union. They are only second to Virginia in the number of battles. The Battle of Shiloh in Hardin County saw 24,000 dead at the start of the war. These bodies lying dead, bloodied, dismembered, disemboweled, was the most repulsive sight and souls of many who were unaware of how to cross over, wandering Tennessee or worse, angry and seeking revenge. The Battle of Stones River, which was another of the highest mortality in Tennessee, gruesome, and brutal of battles also lost 24,000. For two years, these battles were fought and most lost to the Union Soldiers. The anger of the lost souls, building, and the revenge desired. After the Civil War, although forced to secede, still did not have a structured government. Tennessee was influx. The wealthy white educated used everything at their disposal to separate from the poor and uneducated. This separated the classes and created a broken society. The greed of the wealthy, with all their money and power, ran the state for years to come. It did not matter your race or color, they dominated society. The west and center of Tennessee was a white dominated Democratic half and the east kept the Union, Republican beliefs it held since before the Civil War. A state that stayed split until the 20th Century. Tennessee became a state in the middle. During suffrage, Tennessee was a pivotal state and approved the 19th Amendment on a swing vote by Harry Burn, who switched sides after receiving a telegram from his own mother in support of the vote. More national attention came to Tennessee when in 1925; the Scopes Trial was national news. The law forbade teaching evolution in the schools, but Scopes a high school Biology teacher disagreed and taught it anyway. The trial was ridiculed for the high power attorney’s battled it out in court and Tennessee was known as the “Monkey State”, and the trial was called the “Monkey Trial”. The result was inconsequential. Tennessee’s history can never leave out the importance of the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King in Memphis. His legacy, his powerful words will always is remembered. His peaceful protests help end a strike by the black sanitary public works employees to their favor. His death is a powerful reminder of the vile hatred that existed within the state. Dr. Martin Luther King’s assassination began the most civil unrest; riots erupted all over the country. The hatred spilled out into the streets, cities, towns, and states. All the angry spirits and souls were released from their bondage and mayhem erupted.
