Vermont, the 14th state, has a bloody and conflicted past. For years Vermont tried to be a sovereign state. Unfortunately Vermont land was claimed by both New Hampshire and New York. Conflicts due to this duel claim erupted for years. When land was granted to colonists from the New Hampshire side, they were considered invalid by New York and New York granted their own grants. This caused many physical conflicts in Vermont. They had to get the courts involved. When a New York judge showed up in Vermont, violence escalated at the court house and the citizens took over. Death reigned. Two more years passed and Vermont continued to declare its sovereignty. Finally, they reached an agreement and in the process named the territory “New Connecticut”. Six months later at another meeting, they changed the name of the new territory to be “Vermont” and began the process into becoming a state. It was that same year that the Revolutionary War came to Vermont, the Battle of Bennington, was bloody and gruesome. War was hell on earth but this was considered one of the most important battles as it was a turning point in the Revolutionary War. Vermont still celebrates the Battle of Bennington with a legal holiday in its honor. As the years passed the state went through many political and economic changes. Growth in the population was steadily increasing. To their surprise, the War of 1812 came to this landlocked state. In a bizarre twist, this maritime war brought thousands of troops that were stationed here. They outnumbered the residence. They also brought disease and death. Finally when the war was over, the economy began to thrive on sheep farming. With the sheep farming so lucrative, this industry grew so fast that the price of the wool plummeted. Economic hardship followed. Shortly thereafter the Civil War started. Being a northern state, Vermont was definitely joining the Union. Their Constitution of Vermont’s first article was on the rights of all men. This fueled the abolition of slavery movement and in turn the state of Georgia wanted to “tow the state of Vermont out to sea”. Vermonters were glad to serve and more than 28,000 men enlisted. Vermonters served in all of the major battles of the war. The Civil War was the bloodiest and vilest wars here on our homeland. This war left many souls, lost between life and death, still seeking to complete their mission. Many of these souls were angry and seek revenge.
